Travelling on New Year's Eve

This
was a first for me! And I have to tell you it felt great to decide our minds on something new and unsual. For
the first time ever, we've spent New Year's Eve traveling and the chosen destination was the beautiful island of S.Miguel, Azores, right in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
For years, I've joined a bunch of friends for celebrating New Year's Eve in some rentend house settled in the countryside, isolated from
the world and having the time of our lives. It was always pretty magic, full of fun and unforgettable moments. I keep great memories from these New Year's Eve parties. However, I always wondered how it would feel to enjoy this "closure" at a new place, perhaps in a different country, maybe on the south hemisphere where it's summer, who knows?!
It's not that I need the beginning of a new year to start all over again, but I always felt this season as a push to change what doesn't make you happy anymore, a boost to leave some weight behind and try something different this time. An excuse to dream... after all it's a new beginning! And if the way you start it can set the tone of the entire year, this time I was eager to take new chances, open my mind to new challenges and massive changes.
So, we ended up by choosing Azores for our New Year's travel. It's not going abroad, because it's still Portugal and it's not that far. After a two and a half hours flight from Lisbon, the green mountains lost in the middle of the ocean reveals themselves. A little shy, at the beginning, surrounded by the mysterious white mist, and then in all its splendour, triumphaly erected from the water.
You end up landing on a quite familiar place, imersed in natural beauty. It's not a summer destination but the temperatures here are quite pleasant and the forests, craters, mountains and valleys are just waiting to be conquered, adding a very different and unique asset to this New Year's celebration.
This was the New Year's Eve in which the dress code included hiking boots, backpack and a good camera. For 5 days, we explored the island the best we could, renting a car that took us from Ponta Delgada to all and each of the other points of S.Miguel. Get to know our 5-day itenerary, tips and advices regarding what to do, where to go and what to see in "S.Miguel in 5 days".
